Researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History have rediscovered an “ultra-rare” metallic blue bee that hadn’t been seen in so long that experts weren’t sure it still existed. First identified in 2011, the blue calamintha bee is a “highly specialized and localized bee,” which depends on the pollen of a threatened flowering plant. It had only been recorded in four locations totaling just 16 square miles of pine scrub habitat at in central Florida called Lake Wales Ridge....

Sad news to report out of east Tennessee this morning as we learn that Dolly Parton’s baby brother Randel Huston Parton, known as Randy, has died after a battle with cancer. Dolly addressed the sad news via a Facebook post earlier today saying in part, “The family and I are grieving his loss but we know he is in a better place than we are at this time. We are a family of faith and we believe that he is safe with God and that he is joined by members of the family that have gone on before and have welcomed him with joy and open arms....

Bald eagle couple Rita and Ron, the subjects of the popular live eagle cam streaming out of Florida’s Miami-Dade County, are now the proud parents to three eggs. Thanks to a high-definition camera system, audiences watched in awe as Rita laid her first egg of the season on Thanksgiving. She laid a second one a few days later, and much to everyone’s surprise, she produced a third on December 1....

Elijah Garcia was born with arthogryposis multiplex congenita, a condition that affects his muscles and joints. The 13-year-old from Boynton Beach, Florida, has undergone a total of 13 surgeries and cannot stand, walk, or bend his arms to his face. Hoping to improve his quality of life, Elijah’s grandmother, Natalie Quintero, recently took him to see a specialist who informed the family that there is a course of treatment that could change his life....
