One of my most prized possessions is a vintage recipe box that my grandmother gave to my mom, which was then passed down to me. I fill it with handwritten recipes of my own to mix in with recipes my mother wrote out for me. Every time I file through it on the search for cooking inspiration, I think of both women, who I wouldn’t be here without.

No matter which style you choose, the books and boxes are a great way to get everyone in the kitchen and talk about your family history through one of the best storytellers of them all: food. Combine recipes from generations of cooks in your family, and add new ones as you discover them. Before you know it, you’ll have a family heirloom of your own to pass down.
