As the Coronavirus pandemic totally redefines our normal routines, many are offering gestures of hope and solidarity in their community to help people band together—even when they are apart—during these uncertain times.
And what could bring more happiness than Christmas? So far, Christmas lights have gone up all over the country to bring joy to neighborhoods and Hallmark has launched a Christmas movie marathon. Now, one school has riffed on the Santa Claus-inspired cheer and brought it to the remote learning environment.
Welcome to Salem Baptist Christian School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As television network WXII-12, based in Winston-Salem, originally reported, the school designated Monday “Christmas in the Spring” day as part of week-long lineup of virtual spirit week events to lighten the mood during this time of online learning. On Monday, students were instructed to sport their favorite Christmas shirt or sweater, or stay in their Christmas pajamas all day long. For the celebration, students were urged to listen to Christmas music while they worked, watch a Christmas movie after school, and take a family Christmas picture. To capture the sentiment of Christmas, students were also asked to “show kindness and good cheer” to those around them—an extra blessing for sure with anxieties running understandably high right now. Come evening, the assistant principal read a Christmas story for all to enjoy on Facebook.
In addition to a Christmas-themed day, other fun themes were created for each day throughout the week: Tuesday was Super Hero Day, Wednesday was Favorite Sports Team day, and today, Thursday, is “It’s Crazy Day,” with a call-out to wear crazy hats, clothes, hairdos, or socks (or perhaps all of them combined). Tomorrow, the virtual spirit week will wrap up with a school spirit day, in which students can honor the school’s athletic team, the Salem Vikings.

What a fun and thoughtful idea for these youngsters. So fun, in fact, that we may very well suggest to our manager to do the same and kick off a spirit week at work. Now, where are our reindeer ears?
