We caught up with the Red Headed Stranger recently on his bus, and found out that Nelson, who will turn 84 this year, has no plans to slow down.

Q: You will be 84 in April, but you never slow down. What’s the source of all this energy?

A: I think I’ve always been energetic. A lot of people take drugs to get speeded up, but I don’t do that. So I don’t know where it comes from. I’m just glad I’ve got it.

Q: Do you eat a special diet?

A: Oh, I try to eat pretty sensibly. Actually, if you want to know the truth, about all I eat is oatmeal in the morning, and bacon and eggs in the evening.

Q: How do you like your eggs?

A: I don’t think you could fix ’em any way I wouldn’t like ’em. I eat them raw (laugh), however you got them. Soft scrambled, scrambled’s good.

Q: Is there a particular Southern dish that you like?

A: Chicken fried steak. I love that. Fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, all that good stuff.

Q: A lot of people might want to stay home more than you do. What is it that keeps you out on the road working so hard?

A: Well, I love to play music. I can do that better than workin’. (Laugh) I’ve tried that workin’ part, and the music is a little easier for me.
